Review of The Addams Family (1991) by Sherry L — 26 May 2009
Oh my God! It hurts to watch this lame and very awkward remake of the wonderful 1960s tv-series. Terribly cheap gags, and the on-liners don´t work either. I just want to swap every actor/actress in this nastiness, but Christina Ricci who plays Wednesday pretty well. The only scene that made me smile was:
Wednesday (to Uncle Fester): Pass me the salt.
Morticia (to Wednesday): What do we say..?
Wednesday (to Uncle Fester): NOW!!!
The worst gag that made me want to turn off the TV, was the Gone with the wind-thing...Yes, someone opened the book and there came a wind...(you get the idea... ).
In my opinion, Gomez is supposed to be not only crazy but very charming as well. I think the filmmakers missed that or perhaps wanted to create something new that really failed. Raul Julia would make the performance of his life a movie like Scarface (the 1980s version).
Uncle Fester is just too much in this movie, and so is Lurch and grandma. They all look like they are suffering from a severe case of anemia. And Morticia and Gomez relationship isn´t as cute and passionate in this movie as in the series. Here, it rather looks like a kinky, S/M, couple.
I don´t know if it´s the right thing to compare everything with the old Addams family, but when it´s a remake it´s sort of hard to aviod. For a successful remake, they have to take care of some of the old movies (or in this case, tv-series) gimmage. Like Lurch´s; YOU RANG...?
