Review of The Act of Killing (2012) by Evan M — 26 Feb 2014
Bizarre documentary about Indonesian death squads, which executed hundreds of thousands of Communists in the 1960s. Instead of illustrating what happened and educating the audience, the filmmakers opt for allowing the actual ex-squad members to reenact the killings in a variety of cinematic genres.
The finished product is strange, repetitive, and boring. Yet, my biggest complaint was the undersized, white subtitles often placed on a light background making the translated dialogue virtually impossible to read.
