Review of The Accountant (2016) by Neil P — 12 Jan 2017
It looks like Affleck wants to beat his best mate Matt Damon at being Bourne and he certainly tops the last Bourne film. The premise is a bit different and a bit of a right wing dream in the sense a dad "treats" his kid's autism by turning him into a kick-ass fighter.
Hilarity ensues. When stops this film from being another "lone hollywood star wants to be action hero" film is the bizarre way the story flips and flops. There's a good 20 minutes where it could easily be a film about accountancy and the uncovering of tax dodging.
Then there's the fact the film essentially forgets about the final act by delivering a twist (that most should be able to work out in the first hour). Add to that a subplot with FBI agents that essentially goes nowhere.
But oddly it's this off-kilter approach that sets it apart. In many ways it feels like a really high budget pilot for a TV show where the FBI, the accountant and the "mystery" antagonist have different adventures every episode.
It'll probably happen in the form of sequels if the film proved proftiable.
