Review of The Abyss (1989) by Mike L — 15 Jan 2011

I can remember the buzz about this movie when it came out since it was made by the same guy who made Terminator, but it died quickly despite it being a good movie. It was funny because 1989 was the year of underwater movies ( Deep Star 6, Leviathan, The Rift, etc) and I relate it to 1998 when we had all the meteor movies ( Deep Impact, Armageddon ) and how Hollywood gives us such similar movies all the time in a given year.

Ok, this is nothing more than Alien under the sea. Yea there are some cool special effects, at the end, but really this is a rip-off of a much better movie.

I did like the cast and they were very good, especially Ed Harris but at the end I did not buy into the ending, at little to hokey.
