Review of The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) by Danny M — 14 Oct 2009
It had been a little overhyped for me, frankly. I was expecting Phibes to be more of a charismatic character, as Vincent Price tends to play, but instead he just says angsty things really really slowly.
I was told it was darkly comic, but I didn't really see much of that, either, beyond the comically stupid police chief, who was actually pretty hilarious. The sets were more goofy than elegant, and that Vulnavia character.
.. she just had no explanation whatever. Still a decent proto-slasher, but not what I was expecting.
