Review of The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) by Bass 9 — 31 Aug 2013
Vincent Price is the title doctor in this campy bit of AIP horror. Directed by a regular director of the very hip and stylish "The Avengers" series, this film has a similar 1960s fun and quirky vibe to it.
The story involved Price as the disfigured Dr. Phibes, who seeks revenge upon a doctor, Joseph Cotten, who be believes was incompetent in saving his wife from the same car crash that disfigured him. There's great campy performances, snazzy looking art deco sets, Phibes many clockwork creations and all sorts of elaborate revenge scenarios, including a key-in-the-stomach that pre-dates "SAW" by about 40 years, which all adds up to a well deserved cult classic.
