Review of The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) by Justin A — 20 Feb 2015
One of Vincent Price's more stylish movies, though it unfortunately doesn't take full advantage of his talents as he spends a lot of the movie silent and just making creepy faces. While it may be one of the more underrated horror classics of all time, it could have left a bigger impact on the horror genre IF it had only taken itself a bit more seriously and the police didn't act completely incompetent.
The direction is stylish and reminiscent of shots you might see in The Shining. It had a good plot that allowed for constant deaths. The makeup on Vincent Price at the end wasn't that impressive, but it was still memorable.
And the movie had one of the biggest names in horror as its star. This movie had all the ingredients to be a classic up there with The Exorcist or Halloween, but it falls just short. Still, it's absolutely worth checking out for horror fans.
