Review of The ABCs of Death (2013) by Hector B — 31 Oct 2012
26 short films. 26 ways to die.
Each director was given a paltry $5000 to create a four minute short film, each revolving around a word for each letter of the alphabet. And it's clear who really relished the challenge, and who shot something in an afternoon and pocketed the change. Unfortunately the dreck outweighs the good in this anthology, and at two hours long, it can get quite labourious (I was getting fidgety by the half-way mark).
The film contents range from silly, to extreme in-your-face stuff. Child-rape and animal cruelty feature more than once across the films, which sat extremely badly with me. Plenty of the red-stuff flows, with a few actually trying to make social-commentary, even if somewhat ham-fistedly.
All up...I really liked a few of the shorts, was meh, for most, and a few just did absolutely nothing for me (although the audience reactions differed to mine, applauding many that I found abhorrent).
