Review of The ABCs of Death (2013) by Randy P — 24 Feb 2014
I'm a die-hard horror fan and I absolutely love horror anthologies ("Creepshow", "Tales from the Crypt", "V/H/S"), but this has to be one of the biggest disappointments ever! Along with "The Purge", "ABC's of Death" had so much potential in it's plot material and practically threw it away.
Consisting of 26 short horror stories, the two+ hours of the film goes by quickly. 26 horror directors each given a letter of the alphabet to turn into a mini film involving death. Awesome idea. Awesome directors.
What could possibly go wrong? About every damn thing that could have went wrong went wrong. So many of the letters are clearly thrown together in a rush with underdeveloped ideas, crappy visual effects, and sloppy acting.
I give credit to some of the directors though because some were worth the wait. "D is for Dogfight" is visually stunning and incredibly brutal in simplicity, "L is Libido" is twisted and over the top in the best possible way, "U is for Unearthed" was very erie and clever, and my hands down favorite "X is for XXL" is so brutal and sick that it's tough to even talk about but it deserves so much respect for blowing all the other directors away.
I'm giving it a 2 only because of the letter "X", although it deserves more like a 1.5. It may be fun to watch with a large group and hardcore horror fans will appreciate the campiness and originality, but others will surely be appalled and disgusted out of there minds.
"F is for Fart" and many others are downright offensive to this horror anthology. Warning: This is an extremely explicit film both from a sexual and violent stand point because the directors were given no boundaries on what they could include and some of the material is very shocking.
