Review of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) by Todd S — 31 May 2006

[font=Times New Roman][size=4]I will fully admit to having nostalgic feelings about this film. I remember watching this for the first time as a child with my father. The Harryhausen special effects absolutely dazzled me. The Cyclops and the Dragon have stuck in my mind to this day. I still like the look of the effects in this film, even with todays amazing effects. I ended up seeing most of the movies that Ray Harryhausen created creatures for on Saturday afternoon TV and Friday night Creature Features. This one was the first one that started it all for me as far as Harryhausen movies go.[/size][/font].

[font=Times New Roman][size=4] The acting isn?t bad. Most of the principle actors do very well not only with their characters but also in reacting (as well as fighting with) the various creatures that would later be added to the scene. Kerwin Mathews as Sinbad is particularly good at the timing and choreography that was needed for what the studios at the time called ?Dynamation.? The story itself is done very well, and put to film at a good pace. The characters are nicely developed and the adventures well designed. The music score is actually quite memorable and does complement the screen action.[/size][/font].

[font='Times New Roman'][size=4] This movie is more than a good fantasy film. It is a historical document if you will. It is a classic in the genre. It is a great color film example of some of Ray Harryhausen?s best work. Fans of high fantasy will enjoy this one as well as general genre fans and fans of special effects. I have it in my DVD collection and I highly recommend it.[/size][/font].
