Review of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) by Liz K — 24 Jul 2014
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad is another in a line of great movies featuring stop-motion puppet animation (or Dyna-mation) by Ray Harryhausen. The film was actually directed by Nathan Juran, but Harryhausen gets all the credit nowadays.
My favorite Ray Harryhausen film is Clash of the Titans with Jason and the Argonauts coming in second. And while I'm not sure what my third favorite film would be, I don't think it would be this one.
There is some fantastic stuff in this, of course, but the storyline isn't all that interesting to me this time around. Still, it's swashbuckling entertainment, which I love, and it has a lot of grit and charm to it that makes it instantly watchable, over and over again.
Harryhausen films are usually like that, and this one is no exception. It's not the best movie he's worked on, but it's certainly no slouch either.
