A lesser film bearing the same title would have used its characters as tools to get cheap, disgusting laughs. The 40 Year Old Virgin chooses to walk another, better path : there's a surprising sweetness to the way the film makes us genuinely care about the characters, with Steve Carell giving a truly great and hilarious performance, and a lot of great supporting characters (oh, and THAT Jonah Hill cameo).
We laugh with the characters, not at them, and the result is one of the best comedies I have ever seen.
