Judd Apatow seems to have a very interesting sense of humor, to say the least. There's a lot of jokes in The 40-Year-Old Virgin that really work when they land, but for every one that lands, there's one that falls flat.

Jokes in the latter category often ride the line of gross-out humor that just seems crude for being crude, and it's just not all that funny. Because of all of this, the movie is weirdly inconsistent in delivering jokes.

The thing keeping the film afloat, however, is the presence of Steve Carell. Carell is perfect for the titular character, and the way he plays all of the awkward mannerisms of his character is definitely the film's strongest point.

The rest of the cast, including the likes of Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and Elizabeth Banks, all add humorous moments of their own, but this is Carell's vehicle, and he completely delivers. It's just a shame that this talent couldn't have been used in a more consistent comedy.
