Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Mark J — 22 Nov 2008
Hard to believe this was made in 1935. It's a spy thriller with Robert Donnat as the innocent man accidentally caught up in a web of intrigue. The action includes a famous escape scene on the Forth Bridge & the wonderful sequences when Donnat is handcuffed to a reluctant Madeleine Carroll.
This is the real heart of the film; the scenes between Donnat & Carroll provide a humorous counterbalance to the 'trust nobody' theme of the plot. The action scenes do seem a little lame & almost pantomime -like in places, but such are the sensitivities of a modern audience it's unfair to be too critical.
