Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Jonathan S — 03 Jan 2009
A jolly early romp from Alfred Hitchcock, with super-adaptable Canadian rancher Richard Hannay (played by Robert Donat) falsely accused of murder and forced to go on the run while he tries to figure out what the 39 steps are and thwart an espionage plot against England.
Fast-moving and funny, this plays better than a lot of Hitchcock's later, more expensive films from his Hollywood period. Did I mention the hero is Canadian? An ass-kicking Canadian twice as smart as all the Brits he meets? Sweet!
