Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Allen B — 15 Jan 2011
Honestly, I had no idea what was going on through most of this film. The story is all over the place, with the main character running around searching for stuff and avoiding cops and, conveniently, getting handcuffed to an attractive female who was otherwise ignored up until that point, and ends with the least satisfying conclusion you could possibly think of for a movie whose central mystery revolved around a GREAT BIG SUPER IMPORTANT SECRET.
The acting is pretty good, though, and it is entertaining. It tries too hard to be a romance in the last act, though, which ultimately proves to be its undoing. That and the silly plot.
