Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Calvin C — 14 Oct 2013
I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Knowing it's Hitchcock, there's always at least a sense of suspense and intrigue, but I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor too. Very reminiscent of "It Happened One Night", but this time with murder.
Robert Donat is indeed charming, and although she really doesn't do much until the second half of the film, Madeleine Carroll has an undeniable chemistry with him. The dialogue is quick and quick-witted and, although I'll admit that the plot doesn't have as many twists and turns as a modern audience is used to, the performances and script more than make up for it.
