Review of The 300 Spartans (1962) by Rem C — 19 Jun 2009
Small-scale British epic from the early 1960s that tells an essentially true, fascinating tale of few against many (That would later serve as the inspiration for Frank Miller's 300 and the movie of the same name) that, unfortunately, shows its age.
The English actors playing the Spartans are a relatively unimpressive bunch, and as events build to the final battle (next to a lush green riverbank in this version) the effect of the fighting is akin to watching a group of LARPers or a historical reenactment. It's an interesting story, but as a movie, it may be worth watching more for insight into the contrast of styles between it and 300.
