Review of The 13th Warrior (1999) by Kyle S — 24 Nov 2010
The movie has problems - not the least of which was casting Antonio Banderas, a Spaniard, to play a Middle Easterner - but it's one of the best-looking adventure movies. It's filmed so well, full of atmosphere and features battle sequence after battle sequence lit only by torches.
It's story is a very original interpretation of "Beowulf," conceived by Michael Crichton, and despite the faulty script, it is a movie worth a look if you are into studying history and important literature.
it has an amazing score by Jerry Goldsmith that was written in just two weeks time. It's masculine, brutal, heroic - all in all a very satisfying action film. Probably the last great action film from the director of "Die Hard" and "Predator.
