Review of The 13th Warrior (1999) by Greg P — 19 Feb 2012
Thoroughly unpretentious and enjoyable action film. It's a "coming of age" story (albeit a bit belated) of an Arab courtier, Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan, who finds his manhood among a tribe of Vikings who could not be more different than he himself is.
Anyone who can with a straight face deny the power of the lead characters (including the decidedly NON pagan Ahmed) reciting the Viking Prayer as the Eaters approach for the final confrontation is dead inside:
Lo there do I see my father.
Lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning.
Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them,.
In the Halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live...forever.
