Review of The 13th Warrior (1999) by Trey W — 04 Aug 2014
I really don't see why this film was so heavily crapped on by the critics. It's a simple story: enemies attack, they must be defeated, and the city saved. That movie's been made a hundred times.
But I found this to be an fascinating twist on story. The weakest part is the villains, who are never properly fleshed out. Who are they? What are they? Why are they so feared? What are they trying to gain? That's a valid complaint.
The characters are interesting at least. It's probably the most 'authentic' portrayal of Vikings. Both savage and noble. Getting to see it all through the eyes of Banderas, a Persian Emissary it fascinating as well.
Not a 'great' movie' maybe, but defiantly a 'good' one at least.
