Review of That's My Boy (2012) by Aaron T — 19 Jul 2013
I was and am a huge 90's-Sandler fan, and like most people feel he has just lost whatever it was that he had. This movie, however, is actually not that bad. There are a bunch of little "Sandler moments" in the same vein as his old movies from the 90's, especially a gag at the very end that comes out of nowhere and had me laughing long after it was over.
It's a funny movie because it captures that old goofy Adam Sandler spirit that I can't really put my finger on. It doesn't try so hard, like most of his other recent movies do. It's full of enough non sequiturs, goofy characters, random pop-culture references, and silliness for its own sake to put it over the edge and make it feel like a real Sandler flick. It's stupid, but it's smart, self-aware stupidity - I think that's where the comedy comes from.
