Review of That Thing You Do! (1996) by Jon W — 20 Sep 2008
After watching this movie, all I can wonder is why hasn't Tom Hanks directed anything else? He made a sweet, charming movie that captures the fun innocence of the sixties. There really is no villain in the movie, and most of the conflict are understandable, and don't cause major trauma to any of the characters.
All of the main characters are quite good, but Steve Zahn steals a lot of the scenes. A light film, but one that benefits because of it. It breaks the usual "band movie" cliches of the rise and fall of the band, and just presents us with a happy movie that has a great title song.
It is a great song by the way, I'm gonna have "That Thing You Do" stuck in my head for a while. Well done Hanks, well done.
