Review of That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) by Jomo W — 07 May 2008
Games of cat and mouse have rarely managed to prosper without elements of sly humour added here and there, leaving Bunuel wth a tricky bricolage to assert into a coherent aesthetic mass. Thankfully for him, a more than adequate ensemble fit the pieces together with formidable flair, Bouquet is quite simply one of the most underrated performers ever to grace the big screen, being both a sexual shield and agent provocateur, watching Rey's endearing pomposity turn to confusion and furstration over a series of scenes in "neutral" environments.
It may not be Bunuel's piece de resistance, which shouldn't cloud appreciation for a cleverly constructed, if mildly self conscious flick. He may have produced better, he certainly could have done a whole lot worse.
Admirable.
