Review of Thanks for Sharing (2013) by Amilcar A — 21 Sep 2013
Sex addiction is not something you hear much about so it would be a good subject for a movie - and it was when Michael Fassbender hit it out of the park with Shame. That movie was brilliant, sad and bleak. It took any glamour or sexy out of having the need to get laid uncontrollably.
Thanks for Sharing is a pretty mediocre attempt to characterize the same problem. If Shame was Goodfellas, Thanks for Sharing is Dick Tracy. What this movie lacks is the darkness and loneliness of addiction. It's not bad film but there are too many jokes, prettiness and zingers to really make it impactful.
Additionally, if you add Mark Ruffalo and Gwyneth Paltrow as the leads it's pretty darned hard to relate. They are a little too perfect and clean. This is ironic since Mark Ruffalo has played some pretty dark characters and he can be a dirtbag.
In summary, Thanks for Sharing is a decent movie that can be enjoyable and is certainly entertaining. It's simply shallow and lacking substance so I would consider it an opportunity missed. Given the barren wasteland of September movies it's not a bad choice - in fact it might be the only choice.
