Review of Thanks for Sharing (2013) by Thomas W — 01 Jul 2014
Thanks for Sharing is an odd film I have rather mixed emotions on as the film has a strong cast but the characters they play are poorly written and ill-conceived and the film's serious subject matter -- addiction - is a mine field that can just about go left or right after every joke in every scene which could make for a most uncomfortable movie experience.
The film wishes to humanize these characters by making them as "normal" as possible which (itself) is a setup for failure as the characters are already stigmatized in their own heads and all kids know "there is no such thing as normal".
Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right) is an arrogant environmentalist named Adam and Josh Gad (Frozen) plays a despicably detestable ER physician named Neil who never outgrew the age of 12 ... and they are both addicts sponsored by their groups' veteran (Tim Robbins - Bull Durham).
Songstress Pink -- who actually does a fine here under the name Alecia More -- co-stars as a fellow sex addict and her and Gad heavily rely on one here to get the other through their tougher moments onscreen.
Gwyneth Paltrow (Proof) also co-stars as Ruffalo's is-she-or-isn't-she love interest but their blasé, aloof attitude towards one another and life in general makes them very difficult to care anything at all about.
And I really didn't.
