Review of Thank You for Your Service (2017) by Tim M — 17 Dec 2018
'Thank You for Your Service' is a 2017 American biographical war drama film written and directed by Jason Hall, in his directorial debut, and starring Miles Teller. It chronicles Iraqi War veterans in their return to the United States and their dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Teller just isn't quite ready to be a leading man and the adapted screenplay from the 2013 book of the same name leaves a lot to be desired.
Somehow a powerful message about the trauma soldiers suffer from in a return home from wars, gets muddled with drugs and gun running. I really wanted to know the story of the journey not only to getting help, but also what happened when they did. I want to see growth from our characters, many of whom are cringeworthy which does make the performance of Miles Teller all the more strong. There is no doubt this movie swell-intentioned, but overall I just didn't like when it left the PTSD aspect. I wanted a more focused movie. Perhaps I'll go watch the 2016 documentary by the same name about the problems with the health care veterans receive. Final Score: 6.1/10.
