Review of Thank You for Smoking (2005) by Kyo 9 — 19 Jan 2010
Fairly decent satirical comedy, which pokes fun at both the morally dubious world of corporate spin and the often hypocritical liberal politics opposing it. Eckhart is totally smug and self-centred as Nick Naylor, the pro-smoking lobbyist, who is eventually caught out by a hot young journalist and growing guilty feelings regarding his own son.
The script is fast paced and witty with lots of non-PC one liners, and there's a very strong cast but the film falls down in its lack of likeable characters and a strong wavering into sentimentality towards the finale.
It also seems very careful not to take sides in the debate, settling on the moral that the best spin doctor wins.
