Review of Thank You for Smoking (2005) by Tomas T — 28 May 2010
Thank you for smoking is a movie about a smooth talker lobbyist who is considered the scum of the earth for siding with the Tobacco Industry. At glance the movie does not seem to offer much but it turns out to be a splendid black comedy drama with a serious message hidden in it.
Tobacco industry is leathal, nobody can deny it, but with the right argument one can win any debate no matter the subject. This is where the movie shines as the movie is full of colorfull and smart dialogue, the movie would not work without charismatic lead and A.Eckhart is perfect for the role of slick and quick worded businessman lobbyist. The comedy is pitch black through the movie, one only needs to point out that there is a group called "The merchants of Death" where Tobacco, Guns and Alcohol industry representatives meet on morning coffee to compare their "archievements" on making the most out of their customers on their healths expense.
Great script, dialogue, actors and pitch black comedy all fitted in the same package, Thank you for Smoking is one of the best comedies from Hollywood in ages.
