Review of Thank You for Smoking (2005) by Alexis N — 06 Jul 2010
Thank You For Smoking is a political satire about tobacco lobbyist Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart), who tries to promote the agenda of big tobacco, while at the same time, being a good role model to his son.
Here's what I liked about Thank you For Smoking:
1)Hilarious: This movie is a brilliant satire. The characters in the film are so over the top and so twisted that it doesn't stop being funny.
2) Great performances: The cast in the film knocks it out of the park with their performances. Aaron Eckhart does a fantastic job as Nick Naylor. His never ending charisma and his twisted logic will make you want to root for him, until you remember what he's representing.
3) Shines a light: the film shines a light on how organized lobbyists really are and the threat they can pose to the democratic system. Although the film is funny, the point of a satire is to also get you to think, which is what this film does.
4)No one is the good guy: All the main characters in the film are not the best people and no one is the good guy. Yes, Nick Naylor is the protagonist, but he's more of an "anti-hero" at best. It shows that when it comes to politics, no one is truly the good guy.
Here's what I didn't like about thank you for smoking.
1)Satire: Satire's are double edged swords. the only people who will truly get and understand the humor and what is going on is the people who know about lobbyists and follow the news or have read up on it.
Thank You For Smoking is a brilliant piece of satire for the 21st century. I would first recommend knowing a little bit about lobbyists and the controversy they create before going to see this film. But that knowledge will be well worth it because you will get more out of the film.
