Review of Thank You for Smoking (2005) by Amit M — 11 Mar 2011
Maybe I had trouble ascertaining the film's attitude toward the people who have gotten cancer or died from tobacco; I personally have no sympathy for them because I believe in agency and taking responsibility for your choices.
But since Nick quit defending cigarettes at the end, it was almost like he gave in to the whiney babies who blame tobacco companies for their problems. Also, no one ever smoked in the movie, which seemed to suggest that they didn't want cigarettes to be portrayed as "sexy" or "cool" or even just a part of normal life, like how they were portrayed in old movies, and how they were trying to have them portrayed in current movies.
Maybe someone could explain to me the point of the movie? There were just too many things wrong with it for me to enjoy it.
