Review of Thank You for Smoking (2005) by Rameshwar N — 26 Jan 2012
Tremendous writing, out of the world Aaron Eckhart with the devil may care attitude in direction makes this a treat to watch. The wit and entertainment factor induced into every line said on screen is never seen before.
Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) is the chief spokesman for the tobacco companies. He attends talk shows and takes care of PR trying to justify what the tobacco companies do. People are either intimidated or jealous of him, his son worships him and he seems to get everything he ever wants. All comes tumbling down when he shares some secrets in bed with an ambitious journalist and who else is better in damage control than the man himself.
Jason Rietman is a genius. The way he played with the words and the way Eckhart delivers them is unbelievable. There is a little lull just a moment before the final chapter (I can't imagine if anyone could digest so much good continuously) but it bounces back with a bang. The satirical tone of the movie is subtle and of high quality which never loses it's charm even in the most morally questioning scenarios.
Jason Rietman, you are the man. Aaron Eckhart, never thought you had this in you. Just watch it.
