Review of Thank You (2011) by Sophia Q — 08 May 2011
Illogical. Immoral. IN POOR TASTE. That's all I can come up with when describing this movie. I'm not sure what kind of message this movie is supposed to give out, but what I took away from it is that it's OK when a husband cheats on his wife, it's a major sin when a wife cheats on her husband and it's the "right" thing to do to teach your spouse a lesson for doing so, but then, OF COURSE, you must forgive, forget and love each other again. What? I feel like my brains have been fried after watching this movie. Not only is the storyline terrible, the acting is even worse. MOST of the happenings in the movie occur on random, having nothing to do with ANYTHING. For example: Akshay's character tells Sonam's character that men go crazy in the summer and have affairs, because women wear short clothing in the summer. Two seconds later, a random song plays at a New Year's party......in Toronto.....with no snow in sight, still wearing "summer" clothing. I can't even get into how bad this movie was. Akshay's back story made sense, but was too extreme to digest. And let's not even start as to WHY a woman would want to take a guy back who has done so many HORRIBLE things! And why everyone would SUPPORT that relationship is really just downright disgusting....The ending seemed more like "Oh my wife might kill herself if I cheat on her, so I will just be happy and treat my wife right" rather than "OK, I'm a moron and I screwed my wife over by being a jerk." UGGGHHHHH.
On to performances. Akshay Kumar does his usual, except....without any real laughs or sense. Bobby Deol is horrible in his role as a womanizer, simply because he doesn't look the part OR act well. Sonam Kapoor's acting is cringe-worthy. To be honest, if anything, I was most disappointed by her acting - I expect more from Anil Kapoor's daughter. Celina Jaitley is barely there. She's in the beginning and then shows up again at the end. It must be said though that her acting seems to have improved....either that or Sonam's was so bad, she looked great in comparison. Suniel Shetty is good in his role, but is sidelined. He has some humorous moments though. Irfan Khan is just about okay, but his scenes with Rimi Sen are hilarious. Rimi Sen is the STAR of this movie. If there is ANYTHING positive about this movie, it's Rimi Sen, who is absolutely hilarious. Why isn't this woman offered more roles???????? It's a travesty.
I'm not even going to talk about the songs, except to say that the prize of the movie is the scene in "Pyaar Mein," when the old man plays the guitar with Akshay Kumar making out with the chubby girl in minimal clothing....random doesn't even begin to describe it, which makes it all the more funny.
Honestly, stay the hell away from this movie. I'm ashamed of myself that I wasted 2 hours on this and ALSO wrote a review this long. I want to forget this movie exists. STUPID. Really STUPID.
