Review of Texas Killing Fields (2011) by Eoin F — 04 Jan 2012
Michael Mann's daughter brings us this tale of two detectives on the hunt for a killer of young girls. You can tell Ami is related to Michael with that visual style and great choice of music, also the fact you can barely hear what people are saying. Lots of mumbling and moodily lit hijinks ensue.
TKF has some decent scenes in it and some good performances, Sam Worthington can almost pull of an American accent now. Jeffrey Dean Morgan remains the coolest person on earth as well.
Considering it's a pretty straightforward plot, it shouldn't be as difficult to follow as it is. Characters are brought in and then forgotten about and it doesn't really have a satisfying outcome, I don't get the ending.
Anyway, it makes it sound as if I hated the film but I actually didn't. I found it strangely hypnotic and I kept watching as I wanted to see how the mystery unfolded. Some of it is very nicely shot and I loved the score, which is sadly unavailable to buy.
Overall, if you're in the mood for a slow burn, sweaty thriller you could do a lot worse than Texas Killing Fields.
