Review of Tetro (2009) by Matthew C — 22 Mar 2010
Francis Ford Coppola is easily a member of my own revered Pantheon of directors, so it goes without saying that I was very excited when I heard he was coming out with a movie in 2009. Now that I've finally gotten around to seeing it, I have to say that I have been painfully disappointed.
This movie was a very uncomfortable throw-back to early, "experimental" filmmaking -- things that feel experimental in this film haven't been considered such for decades. Though it was interesting to see visual motifs such as mirrors and reflections, flashing lights, and shadows utilized in a very, very classic fashion, the bottom line is that this movie's story was BRUTAL.
Completely uninteresting on all counts. One doesn't feel or develop ANY investment whatsoever into ANY of the characters or their corresponding goals and desires. When it's all said and done, it felt like a muddled mess where you think something must have been resolved at the end.
..? Maybe?
