Review of Tetro (2009) by Eric R — 14 May 2010
Man, Coppola might be even a better all around filmmaker now then he was in what many consider to be his prime. I have really enjoyed both his efforts as of recent in Youth Without Youth and now Tetro.
Coppola working completely independent of the studio system has created a very challenging film about family and the relationship between life and art. The black and white cinematography is gorgeous and this film is clearly inspired by Powell & Pressburger as well as European cinema as a whole particularly Fellini.
The story revolves around a young man bennie who visits his long-lost brother in argentina, Tetro. As the film progresses we are thrown deeper into the dark family history and bond these two brothers share.
Its just a fascinating work that comes highly recommended. Oh, and is it me; or is Alden Ehrenriech basically the new Leonardo DiCaprio.
