Review of Testament of Youth (2015) by David B — 16 May 2015
Waited a few days before reviewing this film to see if its effect stayed with me. I'm trying not to rate films 5 stars unless I really mean it. But this is a marvellous film. It had me from the first frame really because the cinematography is sublime throughout. Every shot has been thought through and carefully constructed with vivid use of light and colour, lots of negative space and of course made plenty of use of young star Alicia Vikander's flawless face.
Given this is hardly the first movie to tell a story like this (even if Vera's book was effectively the first book to do so), it's amazing that they've been able to pull it off so well. But it is a really well constructed and beautifully performed period piece. Not to mention highly emotional.
Outstanding.
