Very good film based on a classic book. Nastassia Kinski, despite a slightly indeterminate accent, for me captured the essence of Tess, most especially when she beseeches God to have mercy on her unbaptized child.

She is perhaps Hardy's most memorable character. Visually excellent in its attention to the details of rural life in the period. The male characters don't come off well because they are not attractive, both ill using Tess who is a pure, earthly creature.

You may be disappointed if you are expecting a romance.
