Review of Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) by Jon W — 06 Feb 2008
A great villain always deserves a second appearance and Toho studios knows that as well as anybody. So a year after GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA, Toho brought the cybernetic doppelganger of its main monster star back to the screen.
This time around, they also brought back composer Akira Ifukube and director Ishiro Honda--in his final directorial effort in the series. The tone this time is quite a bit darker than previous entries but it's still just a lot of fun.
The Godzilla suit has been hardened a bit, thankfully, though it still looks a bit like Smokey the Bear. The new monster, Titanosaurus, is a memorable and entertaining creation. The direction is a bit uneven at times, but overall it's very well-done.
Any Godzilla fan should have a terrific time watching this. Thanks to Classic Media it's now available uncut, the way it was meant to be seen. Just be aware that the original Japanese version contains nudity and thus is probably not suitable for younger viewers.
