Review of Terror by Night (1946) by Matthew D — 05 Aug 2018
A quaint mystery on a train.
The ever suspenseful and joyful Sherlock Holmes series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce sees itself on an odd investigation during a train ride. This is as entertaining as any of the Rathbone Holmes stories. I found the plot straightforward, the mystery intriguing, the clues well hidden, the comedy humorous, and the movie great. This is old school mystery at its finest.
Rathbone is as astute and charming as Holmes as you can imagine. Bruce plays Watson with an oblivious glee, but more observant this time around. Alan Mowbray is compelling in his dual role with convincing multiple personas. Dennis Hoey is quite funny as the over his head Inspector Lestrade. Finally, Renee Godfrey is fascinating as Vivian Vedder in Terror by Night. She is always curious with the strangest accent. Godfrey also portrays Vedder with a sultry air of suspicion. I like her in Terror by Night quite a bit.
Overall, the solid direction, unique bottle nature of Terror by Night leads to more suspense. Sherlock Holmes cannot escape this area, so he and Watson are trapped with a killer on this train to Edinburgh!
