Review of Terri (2011) by Jeff C — 08 Dec 2011
Wow- this sweet surprise of a little movie- currently hiding in a redbox near you is easily one of the best films of the year. It's the story of oversized high school student Terri and his friendship with the eccentric school principal and a few of his unique classmates. I don't know how this one so sadly slipped through the cracks in theaters but it is surely Oscar worthy in many departments- especially for it's screenplay.
If you are a fan of fine acting look no further than John C. Reilly's joyous performance as the principal. He should get an Oscar for it but probably won't- but dare I say he'll almost certainly get an Independent Spirit award. Aside from Reilly all of the acting is top notch and the characterizations are rich and satisfying.
"Terri" captures the awkward moments of the high school experience we all went through with a tender precision. This is the first film I can say that has ever reminded me of the immortal classic "American Beauty" in a good way. Again, I hope it gets proper recognition when award season comes around. It had me standing up and cheering in my living room at 2am.
