Review of Terms of Endearment (1983) by Jon G — 26 Feb 2008
Supposedly shameless melodramas don't feel as close to home as this, the directorial debut of sitcom demigod James L. Brooks. Though the film has its soap operatic moments, it does indeed also have great bits of humanity and comedy.
Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger are perfectly cast as a mother and daughter who try to sort out each others and their own lives over the course of many years. Jack Nicholson is a hoot as the womanizing astronaut next door who is tamed by the steadfast MacLaine.
