Review of Terms of Endearment (1983) by Marco F — 11 Jan 2014
TERMS OF ENDEARMENT is a very, very good movie- brilliantly acted, intelligently written and superbly staged. The film and its characters are a bit odd- strangely odd, maybe. But there isn't a bad performance in this movie by its fabulous cast and the way this film balances tragedy and comedy is almost masterful; something that is really, really hard to do unless you have a script that has established a world compelling enough for the writer to move around in.
MacLaine and Nicholson deserved their Oscars but this film also won Best Picture in 1983- I thought THE RIGHT STUFF, which was also nominated for Best Picture- was simply a better film through and through.
But TERMS OF ENDEARMENT is an excellent film- it may well be the tearjerker of tearjerkers.
