Review of Terminator Genisys (2015) by Danjel H — 08 Nov 2015
What works? Surprisingly it's Arnold - he works. Kyle Reese does not work, coming off as a bit of a muppet and the only threat of personality he has was done better in the original. Sarah Connor doesn't work - too child-like, too well fed compared with the wiry intensity of Hamilton. These characters are all so constrained by the plot, they don't really have anything of their own except this on-the-nose palm-stroking gimmick.
The story doesn't work. The original SkyNet had restrictions, the nuclear launch was the only way to grab power, the Genesys SkyNet is actually pretty cool and has a good case: Genesys demonstrates the ability to interact with humans without killing them, oh - also it can make people basically immortal, curing all disease and pain on the planet. Why would we want to destroy that? This is a version of SkyNet that doesn't need to launch a single nuke.
