Review of Terminator Genisys (2015) by Mo B — 22 Dec 2015
Another day, another damn reboot/remake/re-something. It's The Terminator's turn this time, and with Arnie now free of his governator duties he's back and able to take in the other kind of -ator.
Again, it's all pointless enough of an endeavour, but in the action-film stakes it's all about the entertainment factor.
No, there aren't many smarts here, and it's not even close to being in the same universe of quality and the franchise highlight T2. But as purely expendable popcorn chewing frivolity, Genisys hits enough of the right notes to be pretty enjoyable.
Schwarzenegger saves the day here in a mostly non-digitized form (looking at you Terminator: Salvation), but his youthful co-stars bring their own to the table. The dialogue sways from overly-expositional scene-setting to the obviousness of the one-liners and franchise hallmarks.
Genisys at least attempts to reinvigorate the franchise with an interesting new plot direction; too bad the trailers spoiled it all before the audience got the chance to be truly surprised with what the movie had to offer.
Throw in a few mostly-seen-before but still entertaining action-set pieces and you have a semi-decent entry that at least sits higher than T3 and Salvation in terms of quality.
