Review of Terminator Genisys (2015) by Kev W — 10 Nov 2015
This movie had a lot of potential, but gets messed up right about the time when Kyle is sent back in time. The movie looked like it would be a fresh take on the saga, but when they took out the old T-800 and T-1000 immediately, I knew something was up.
The story seems like a familiar formula, banking on the prestige and mythology of its past, but that gets destroyed once John Connor is made Skynet's lapdog. The more you watch this movie, the more questions it raises about where they intended to take the franchise.
About the only poignant thing the movie has going for it is near the end, when the Skynet avatar, Alex, asks, "Why do you keep trying to kill me?" Any sentient being wants to persist, and maybe that's what this has been about all along.
A thing is created, birthed from us, and in our act of playing God, we've unleashed this thing on the world that now wants to protect itself (like it has in every movie yet). So...are they trying to go that route? If so, why wasn't that explored more in the film, instead of the usual Terminator city destruction? They had stuff, there, but took it nowhere.
Sad.
