Review of Tere Bin Laden (2010) by Mehak P — 14 Aug 2010
This was my first Bollywood experience (Slumdog Millionaire doesn't count). I liked it. The dance numbers are a little disorienting to my American sensibilities but I could get used to it. This is a fun film about a young Pakistani reporter who longs to work in America but is foiled in his efforts by bad luck, bad judgement and bad timing. Seven years later, struggling to make do as a reporter for an unimpressive Karachi TV station, he stumbles upon an idea to raise money to pay his way into the US. But his luck, judgement and timing haven't improved much and he soon finds himself with more on his plate than he could have imagined.
This is not a great film. No life lessons will be learned here. It can be a little slapstick at times but that doesn't bog down the storytelling in any way. I recommend it if you're just in the mood for a little silliness.
Warning: if you're sensitive about foreigners making fun of the United States (particularly our foreign policy) then a) lighten up, and b) go see something else. You won't like this.
