Review of Tequila Sunrise (1988) by Benedick L — 28 Jul 2008
Premise is good. Execution: could have been better. Gibson plays it low-key as the is-he-still-a-drug-dealer-or-not with Russell as his friend and Pfeiffer as the love interest for them both. There a few twists and turns in this film but unfortunately most can be seen a way off and the writer-director Towne, who is a very well respected screenwriter, tries to cover these obvious plot twists with glossy dialogue.
The cinematography, which won an oscar, is excellent thanks to Conrad L Hall's skill as a director of photography. Good cast, Juila hams it up a bit, just let down by a thinks-it-is-clever plot line.
