Review of Tentacles (1977) by John C — 30 Mar 2011
Tentacles, along with Q: The Winged Serpent, were the first creature features I remember seeing, and so I've always enjoyed watching them.
The soundtrack to Tentacles is sort of an instrumental 70's disco type of sorts, appropriate at some points, not so much at others, but still fun and different. With the voice of Gandalf from the animated The Hobbit stuck in my head throughout (John Huston stars in this), watching it again was a nice, fun break from the routine and modern creature movies and it brought back alot of memories.
This take on Jaws is about a man eating giant squid, causing trouble along the coast line while the locals try to find out exactly what's causing the deaths. When a boat race starts and all havoc ensues, what they are left with an attempt to get the help of two killer whales to take down the monster, if possible.
At some points very suspenseful, at others rather slow, but the movie is fun to watch for those that remember, and so still love, 70's filming and acting. Henry Fonda even has a role in Tentacles, albeit not a very important one.
