Review of Tell Your Children (1938) by Chris E — 01 Jan 2010
Has one of your close friends or family members murdered everyone around them, attempted rape, and then commited suicide, all because of the dreaded narcotic marijuana? Probably not, considering that something like that has never happened in the history of the Earth.
However, the 1937 exploitation flick Reefer Madness would like you to believe differently. Just a warning: if you want to use this film to scare your kids into not using drugs, don't bother; it's hard to believe that this film was even taken seriously in the 30's.
Reefer Madness is simply a result of the government's fear and paranoia of the latest teenage fads. Hell, even though the movie is completely propaganda, it might not have been half-bad if it was well made.
This, however,is sadly not the case. In fact, all of the film's entertainment value comes from poor acting, terrible writing, and especially horrendous dancing. Reefer Madness's worst trait, however,is the choice of actors; it seems like the casting director was high on marijuana himself when he picked a handful of players in there late 20's to early 30's to protray teenagers.
After seeing this film, I have a word of advise to modern filmmakers: leave anti-drug education to the D.A.R.E officers.
